Last year, my toddler checked out the board book Polar Bear, Polar Bear, What Do You Hear? from the library and absolutely loved it. Since I saw how much he enjoyed it, I went ahead and purchased the sound effects version for him as a Christmas Gift.
All of my kids have continued to read this, and last week I put together a Paper Plate Lion Craft to go along with the story.
To recreate this craft, you will need:
– 1 White Paper Plate
– 2 Pipe Cleaners AKA Fuzzy Sticks
– 2 Wiggle Eyes
– 1 Orange Craft Pom Pom
– 1 Wooden Craft Stick AKA Popsicle Stick
– 3 Crayons, Orange, Darker Orange, and Black
– Safety Scissors
– Glue
– Pen
Most of these items can be found at a craft store or even a dollar store.
Directions:
First have your child color the mat side of the Paper Plate. The inner part the lighter orange, the outer part darker orange or vice versa. Then glue on the eyes and nose. Let this completely dry.
Depending upon your child’s maturity you may need to assist less or more. My kindergartener was able to do this all by herself, my almost 3-year-old needed help with the cutting and gluing (plus since there were small parts I needed to keep a close eye on him).
Next, have your child cut the lion’s mane. I then alternated turning in the cut sections in and out.
Then, draw on the ears and mouth, whisker freckles, and poke two holes on each side of the lion’s face with the pen.
Then crisscross the pipe cleaners through the back to secure through the holes.
Finally, glue the craft stick to the back and allow it to dry.
I think this is not only a creative way to teach about lion’s, but it can also be incorporated in a lesson about the letter L. Not to mention it is great for hand-eye coordination and makes a fun puppet!
